Easy tutorial for hand painting wooden trays to create a chic, bohemian home decor piece. Affiliate links in post.
Welcome, my friends, to the first post that lives up to this website’s name: an honest-to-god DIY! Since moving into our new apartment, my crafting supplies have been securely packed away in a cupboard – but now that I have a workspace I am ready to get stuck back in.
Now, something I don’t remember if I’ve mentioned on the blog yet is the fact that I have quit my job! I am free as a bird – with the lack of anxiety to prove it. Word to the wise: don’t work at a call centre, kids. They slowly drain your will to live – and rapidly drain your will to socialise with other humans.
With that regular income gone, however, I am starting to think outside the box for money earning opportunities. And one platform I’m going to invest more time into in 2022? Etsy! So I’ve been experimenting with lots of different practical craft ideas to potentially sell . . . and I just had to share this one with you all!
What We’re Making Today
I think you guys are going to love today’s craft! It’s gorgeous, practical – and surprisingly easy to make. We’re putting together a chic, modern display tray with a trendy hand-drawn pattern.
This tray is perfect for displaying candles, keeping your desktop tidy – or just as a statement decor item! And it’s fabulously affordable to recreate. Shall we get started?
What you need
– Wood tray
– Gold, black and white paint pens (or paint in colour of your choice)
– Acrylic paint in rust orange and black
How to make
I would love for you to check out this tutorial in video format and follow me over on TikTok too!
- On a covered surface, paint your wooden tray in your chosen colour. Make sure to turn the tray over and check it from multiple angles to ensure it’s fully covered.
- Once dry, use your gold paint marker to draw minimal faces on the base
- Paint large rust-orange splodges onto the faces, then use your paint pens to add detaling.
See – this is super easy to recreate at home! There’s so much potential to customise this to fit your personal decor scheme too.
Alright, lovers, we shall end at the end! If you enjoyed this tutorial, don’t forget to share it – this website is still a baby, so it really helps me to grow. Oh, and follow me on Tiktok. You are so talented! I absolutely love the look of this serving tray. The black, gold, and orange compliment each other so well. Thank you for sharing, next time I’m at the hobby store I definitely have to pick some stuff up to create this!
Thank you so much! 🙂 It’s honestly so easy to make – I definitely recommend trying it! x
Oh this came out SO GOOD!! Ugh I worked in call centers for YEARS when I lived is Seattle it is AWFUL. I feel your pain. I have a wardrobe I was going to paint black with chalk paint but then I thought I might just stain it really dark with gel stain a wee bit less challenging and swap out the pulls for gold T bar pulls.
